Backup Light Lens Markings B/C

#1 Post by Dennis Vogel »

Would someone be kind enough to share a photo of an original backup light lens (aka reverse light) from a B or C? I am trying to see what the markings are. This would be Porsche Catalog part number 644.631.641.05. I believe it was Hella, glass, and clear on US vehicles.

There is a small photo in Dr. Brett Johnson's book, but I am unable to see the markings. I realize there are reproductions, but would like to know what was original.

Thanks.

Thank you John.

Those markings are quite a bit different than the others I've found.

Most I've seen have K21605 above Hella. I wonder what the difference is.

From the one on my 65 C when I bought it. Unsure if original but it is glass and cracked

John. How confident are you that the lens is original? I've been doing some brief searching on those lens numbers, all I come up with are VW Bus backup results.

It was in the Roadster when I bought it so it may not be OEM. Maybe others can chime in. I will look at the lens on my 1963 356B also.

Thanks Doug. That is consistent with the Stoddard offering.

FWIW - The markings I'm finding on new offerings is: Still unsure which is correct / for what year. They are both listed as replacements for 644.631.641.05.

Below is a picture from my 1963 S90 coupe which is similar to what Doug posted:

This is an offering from Stoddard. It does not have the HELLA marking, but does have the 62548. The markings at the left corner are also different:

Just to add a curiosity to the thread, I found this NOS where I live, the Canary Islands (Spain). Real glass and the make is.... SWF !

Jorge, the SWF is from a bumper mounted vw bug back up light. It has a chrome housing attached to it normally, a bit like the Hella 128 housing but deeper.

Many thanks for the info Jules. My intention is to use it with NLA Reverse Light Assembly, Without Lens. It seems to me it will be a correct fitting.

That should fit yes, but a 356 never came with an SWF backup light glass, they were all made by Hella.

I understand. Choosing between a “plastic” reproduction and a SWF glass lens, I shall keep the glass SWF. I really appreciate the info Jules

The Hella repros are all glass as far as I know. Perhaps there are plastic repros out there, but I have never seen one.
