What is the correct ignition for 1958 356A Cabriolet
My 356 had a build date of 12th February 1958
Chassis number 15022.
Kardex states ignition key no F083
It currently has an ignition with a number K195 etched on it but it does look like it may have been done by hand. This number is the same as the current key number.
This has bullet type push connectors.
Can anyone tell me if this is the correct type of ignition ?
I have a feeling it may have had the previous screw type .
Thanks as always for your help.

Re: What is the correct ignition for 1958 356A Cabriolet
Here is Kardex info for ign and door key numbers vs car build dates that I have gleaned over the years:
11-Jun-57 F083 64115.00
19-Jul-57 F100 K182
13-Dec-57 F082 K198
22-Apr-58 K169 K169
10-Jan-59 K100 K100
You can see that your car could be one of the last with an F code ignition switch.
Anyone one else have closer data points?

Thank you Brad.
That shows me that F numbered ignitions had K1** door key numbers.
The other question I am trying to answer is when did the older style and newer styles ignitions change ?

Thanks David.
I can see that ignition key numbers were 'F" for my car.
Does this mean the ignition type was also different to the later 'K' key numbered cars.
In other words were 'F" numbered keys matched with the older style ignition unit ?

The ignition switch should be type #8276, look carefully and you should be able to read the number on the back side.
The key numbers are just that and don't necessarily identify the type switch.

Re: What is the correct ignition for 1958 356A Cabriolet
Tom,
The switch I have has the number 8275.
I think this is a slightly later ignition with push in connections.
It seems odd that the number you are suggesting is one digit more 8276.
I think the earlier ignition switches had connectors that you have a screw to secure the wires.
I will try to send you an email showing photos.
Thanks for your help.

Tom,
I have just fond a post by you from you in 2010 as follows:
Perhaps these photos will answer the above questions. 1956-1957 T1 cars used a switch with part number SH/ZAS1/5 and 1957-1961 T2 cars used a switch, part number 8275.
Ignition Part Number
1950-1952 SH/ZS3/1
1952 SH/ZS1/1
1953-1955 SH/ZS4/1
1956-1957 T1 SH/AS1/5
1957-1961 T2,T5 8275
1962-1965 8276
How great that you are still helping people like me.
It looks like I have the correct ignition.
Thanks for the assistance.

My Kardex states ignition key number F083.
My ignition has K195 engraved on it which is the same as on the key.
Can this be correct ?

David, first comment on your chassis #. There is a digit missing, should be 6 not 5.
Second, I have two 59's both built in 58, one a cabriolet built in Sept 58 and both have one key for ignition and doors and both have bullet connectors. Keys and switch/doors have same number.

If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

David,
You are correct the chassis number 150222.
I can’t understand why an ignition key F083 can have the same key as door handles with the number K100.
If feel I must be missing something?

David, My '58 cab, build date 12/57, has the ignition switch with screw style connectors, not bullet push-in style.
Not at home, so can't look for the # on the switch.
