Have no idea what happened to my previous response.
BLOCKS-BOOKS.com has stock of both
Edition one
&
Hard cover, signed and numbered rev 2 (reproduction is better than the soft back rev 2).

Brett,
I've resisted making this recommendation thinking it could lengthen the process - but it could also make things a bit easier on your end. Think about a Version IV layout with divisions for each model of 356s. Part 1 for pre-As, part 2 for As, Part 3 for Bs, etc. Rather than go through the evolution of various components and then skipping to the next component; layout each model's chapter identically with specifics applicable to that model. Part 1 - pre-A engines, pre-A transmissions, pre-A chassis, pre-A instruments, etc.; Part 2 - A engines, A transmissions, A chassis, A instruments, etc., etc.

Looking forward to seeing this get underway and helping if needed. I have two pre-As & an A and tons of photos at your disposal.
Best,

I'm in, I would like to contribute to the pre-a stuff. How do we get started?
I am sure all of us know of one car that is completely original, IF we can get the owners to
co-operate. Could we document one car from each year and each discipline?

There have been many body/sheet metal changes/differences over the years and I would certainly be able to help in your endeavor of #IV authenticity. This would be a very interesting project

Brett,
I'd be pleased to help out any way I can with my '53 America coupe survivor, 51015, Aug. 10, 1953. Other than a lousy paint job in the early 1970s and the wipers, harness, visor, seat covers, headliner, and most of the body rubber seals it's original.
More details, history and photos are in an April, 2018 Panorama article, "A Different Sort of Awesome".

For some reason, the automatic contact part of the Forum apparently stops working on Page 2 or I screwed up somewhere. Because of this, i have not answered any posts since August. Had David Green not emailed me separately today, I'd probably never have figured this out. So I need to answer some of you and I'm really sorry, I didn't do this sooner.

Since I posted this, Curt Dansby has asked I I'd write for the magazine again and I have put together an article for the January issue with additional details and progress notes.

Spencer Harris -- August 6 -- I did the 356 Defined book in exactly the order you suggested and it was in color too! It didn't sell nearly as well (like 20%). Because of the previous format for this and my 911 & 914 books, it is a much simpler undertaking to keep the format.

Victor Ingram -- August 7 -- Yes! Authentic cars really help. I plan to post questions to the Forum and in the magazine. Pre-A stuff is difficult, but more unrestored examples exist, so they are probably easier to research. Just need people to respond.
