BRASS 14MM (head) battery ground strap bolt for a 356A

#1 Post by Chris Stavros »

Hello friends,
I'm looking for an original (or good reproduction) "Brass" ground strap bolt for my 356A. Not sure of the length, but perhaps 15mm?

OR...if you know where I can buy a good reproduction, that would be most helpful too.

Thanks in advance.

Chris

Get some 14mm brass hex bar and make them on the lathe. If there is enough demand I am open to making a run of these.

Joris,
I'm in for at least 10. But I'm assuming that's a drop in the bucket in terms of production numbers. I've found its the most common item left off cars that have reached very high scores in shows. I'm surprised that someone hasn't made them. Please let me know if and when you go into production.

thx,
Chris

How much $$$ do you want to spend, anyway? Buy the steel bolt I suggested with the markings on the head. You only need one piece. It's black oxide. Ok, blast it and find some spray paint at Ace Hardware that looks like "brass" and maybe over spray with clear. The concours judge will never know!

I recollect being disappointed to find that according to "Neils Book" the brass bolt should be hand painted black (on a 1958). I have always enjoyed having a polished brass ground strap bolt. I have lent my book to a friend who is restoring a 1958 coupe so I can't verify my recollection. A very careful judge would carry a magnet to separate out 'cheaters' who painted a steel 14mm bolt black.

Yes, they were indeed touched up black and rather sloppily I might say. The bolt for the transmission ground strap is not brass by the way and also not touched up black

There is an ad on The Samba for them. Not sure about dimensions.
