T6 heat valves
Are the rivets that hold the dash heater valves together originally bare brass or painted? Bare certainly looks nicer.

Re: T6 heat valves
Hi, Martin. Are you referring to the fresh air intakes under the hood? If so, looking at unrestored ones on The Samba, it looks like the rivets were zinc plated and painted.

Re: T6 heat valves
The rivets on my two sets are definitely plain brass. I was suspecting they should be painted, losing me that under-hood bling I crave.

Re: T6 heat valves
I'll have to check mine. It's interesting that in the pics, they look zinc but I don't doubt you. I wonder if there were changes in manufacturing. You know my mantra, "Porsche...consistently inconsistent..."
All the best,

Re: T6 heat valves
I’ve only seen brass, but not a particularly large sample.

I just checked mine. Magnetic so not brass. The brass would look nice. Get out the Brasso!

You weren’t just detecting the steel housing surrounding the rivet?

Re: T6 heat valves
I used a small earth magnet directly on the rivets but I can check again.
Update: I just checked again with a less powerful magnet but I think you are right. The magnet is picking up the body of the valve since the rivet is so small and firmly attached. The valves on my car are powder-coated. If they were painted, I could scrape the rivets to find out. Maybe some other members will weigh in.

Bad title as they have nothing to do with heat unless you have the Aux heater

Re: T6 heat valves
Aren’t they connected directly to the heat ducts that come up in the hinge pillar? Or does the heat simply go to the defroster vents? I never really studied it.
I just looked at how it’s set up. With the heat on one setting of these valves it would heat the trunk, probably not really an intentional part of the design. With the heat off fresh air might trickle out of the defroster vents and the openings next to the seats.

Re: T6 heat valves
I thought there was a recent thread that shows the air flow into the 356. The intakes under the hood bring in fresh air but don't the vent levers on the dash deflect air from those intakes either to the front and rear windshields or to the kick panels? Opening the heater valves using the knob or lever on the shifter base introduces hot air into the system.

Re: T6 heat valves
Found this picture here in the forum, looks like zinc plated.

I remember I saw a post detailing the restoration of these fresh air flapper valves, but cannot find it, and the link does not work.

Here some pictures from that post.
He does not mention anything about the rivets and in the last picture of the assembled valve there are no rivets.

Re: T6 heat valves
The two sets I have are definitely held together with brass rivets but that may not be the only type they used.

You can do a search for "fresh air" and scroll down the page for the pics.
