i need some help installing a turn signal relay on a 1956 356A as original.
looking for some pics of an original relay mounted under the dash.
i would like to know what kind of relay and bracket was used.

I Googled the topic, "1956 Porsche fuse block" and found pictures showing the fuse block and the relays to the right of it. They show the black horn relay on the left and the green signal light relay to the right of it. They are attached to the firewall with sheet metal screws; no other brackets except the ones on the relays. I'd check to see if the screw holes are still there unless that metal has been replaced.

One thing I'm not sure of is the location of the relays if you have a right hand drive car.

Hello Mike,

Thanks for the information but i am trying find some information on the round turn signal relay that is located somewhere behind the gauges.

Some pics would really help.

Could it be that you mean the "flasher" unit ? That is located on the left side of the car on T2s, (relays and fuse block on the right) I'm not sure about T1s but it' probably the same.

Jeroen, On my 1958 coupe the flasher unit is just above the front compartment release. It plugs into a plastic receptacle with three flat prongs. On my 1956 car it is in the same location but does not look original in the mounting metal bracket and crimp on wire connectors.

Jim, thanks for the pictures. Porsche started in 1957-1958 using the plastic receptacle. On 1956 cars there should be a metal bracket and the wires were directly connected/screwed to the flasher relay like on Pre a cars. So i think the one on your 1956 car could be original. Do you have a picture from your 1956 car?

Sorry about the blurred picture. As you can see someone has changed the wiring ends probably because they could not find a flasher with screw on connections. Did Porsche use a round flasher in 1956 with screw on connectors that would fit into this bracket or did they still have the larger square unit like the early cars?

Jim thanks a lot for the picture. I found the same bracket in all the parts that came with my car. Also there is a hole at the same location as your bracket is mounted. Now i know the type of bracket and location! Only need to find the round flasher with screws. I think this was a Hella or Bosch.

That bracket is not original.

The real early A cars had the Hella 91/22b-20 relay which had a little bracket spot eldd to the top of the can which got screwed to the front fire wall. The later early A cars had the bracket attached to the side of the relay can. These brackets also had a grommet to prevent the can from rattling. The relays with the plastic base as shown here were later (probably started around the T-2 change. The parts book might be able to tell)

Hello Joris, just when i thought i got the answer...... :D

are you sure about this bracket? both cars have the same brackets at exactly the same location.

do you have a picture or hella number from the relay with the side bracket with the grommet? (it's not in the parts book)
