Installing rear side panels question
Hello Fellow 356r's,
I am restoring now a 1965 C coupe-back from paint, just finished the headliner, and ready to install the carpet kit.
Ready to put in the rear side panels and thinking I am missing a clip on the backside of my side panels.
Ron Roland quote "These cars also have a sheet metal lip spot welded at the top of the side panel. There are large, U-shaped clips that hold the upholstrey and backing to this lip."
I think I can fabricate some clips to do the job and glue them onto the rear side panels-
Does anyone have a picture of these clips?
Not alot out there when it come to this.
Thanks for input.
Steven

Re: Installing rear side panels question
I have attached a couple of photos showing the clip in question. Fortunately, I still have the original side panels and clips from our 356C coupe. There is just one (1) clip per side. If you no longer have them, you can probably find a suitable one at your local auto parts store (usually stock a variety of trim clips). You need one large enough to snugly accommodate and secure the thickness of the hardboard panel plus the metal "lip."
The "lighter color" on the backing is the witness mark for the metal tab affixed to the top of the inner side panel.
We are at the same place... recently got our 356C back from paint and Paul Hatfield will soon have "Miss April" back, too. It is good to be able to compare notes and get questions answered.

I found something at the local Ace Hardware that was similar.

Thanks Bill for taking the pictures, much appreciated. Looks like one panel has the bend over on the top of the clip, and the other one at the bottom,?
Are my eyes telling me correctly?
Have you found the steps to installing carpet kits?

No, Steven... those two photos are actually of the same clip, just from a different angle.
Although I have received the carpet kit from Autos International, I have not found any instructions yet. I do, however, have a lot of photos that I took as I was tearing the old interior out. I imagine that using the search function on the forum may result in finding some tips.

Re: Installing rear side panels question
I just installed new side panels and rear panel in my car over the last few weeks. The old panels and vinyl were sketchy at best, and I had no clips.
I drilled two small holes and ran sheet metal screws through the metal lip. I left some material long enough to wrap over the metal lip and glue to the back for even more security.
Totally not original, but the screws were also suggested by Mr. Roland in lieu of finding the clips. They're well-hidden by the garnish rail.
Much respect for doing it right!
