What does this do and why do we all ignore it?
Its the black steel narrow tube you see at the top of the shroud behind the coil.
Did this carry a wire or two originally?
Fan shroud black steel tube attached at top? Why?

On the older cars,it held the dipstick. The temp sending probe went where dipstick goes on Pre A's.

Dipstick holder used on early cars with the temperature gauge sensor probe that uses the same location as the dipstick(when checking level).

Thanks Tom and CJ. The dipstick is now on the other side on C cars so would not have guessed that.
The factory obviously decided it didnt need deleting necessarily and saved the cost of a retool on the shroud steel.
Ok. What about the smaller rubber grommet that presses into the front of the shroud - why have that hole? Its just below this tubing. Maybe somethings should stay a mystery.

The small plugs cover blind nut welded to inside the shroud. you can see the threads if no plug is there They were there for other applications using the shroud. Tom

The dipstick has always been on the right.
The plugged holes were used by VW; the basic shroud is a VW piece, with modifications.

I keep a spare dipstick there because it looks cool. Plus, sometimes I set things down and drive off...
