Factory Original TwinGrill? PreT6 Notchback

#1 Post by Professor Bardia Manafi »

Hi All
I recently got my first Porsche, its a 1961 1600Super Karmann, the rear lid is a twin grill on my T5 notch-back (with no number stamped on it) instead of single grill, the rest of the car is all matching and the car has original floors and it is in very good shape, the car rolled off production on the last days of August in 61'. From the seals and body I'm 99% sure its a no accident car, so could it be just another one of those interesting things that Porsche did?, Ive been told. and did the 1600SUPER badge was an option ? cause mine doesn't have one. Also I'm looking to buy the drivers manual, does anyone know what is closest print date for the drivers manual for my car(august 61), the closest edition I found was April 1960, also looking for original workshop manual, thanks and any suggestion on a grease gun for my car Cheers

I thought the engine designation badges were standard.

I'm with Vic on this one. The car should have and most likely had a badge under the PORSCHE script. The twin grille lid is from a 62 (has no louvers in the rain tray under the grilles) and probably was put on by a previous owner but I wouldn't bet on that.

unnumbered deck lid was probably a replacement deck lid from a dealer. Look closely at the paint shades on the hinges and the underside of the lid. Update to the twin grill would have not been that unusual in the 60's.

Look on the "Tongue" of the rear latch. Maybe 2 or 3 digits common place for engine lid numbers on a Karmann

The original tongue may now be bolted to a replacement lid so it wouldn’t prove much.

the last T5 notch was 201048. Highly doubtful they started using a T6 lid on a T5 300 cars before the end of production.

From my limited records on T5 notchbacks this car was ruby red originally. Maybe the lid got replaced prior to the repaint. That may also be when it lost it's 'S' designation on its butt. Reach up with your arm between the tail pipes and you may find a little filler where the holes were.
