Cover for owners manual

#1 Post by John Wurner »

During what years did Porsche provide the owners manual and other paperwork in the red paper sleeve with the embossed Porsche logo?
Thanks, John

Hi John,

The red paper cover for Owner's manual, etc., was used in 1956 and 1957 T1. In late 1957 model year (May, June & July) there was a transition to start the 1958 model year T2, which used the maroon vinyl style cover. I am not sure when the paper cover was phased out, probably June or July 1957.

Hi John and Tom
I have been researching this folder as I had a very tatty original that came with my 1959 T2 RHD AFN delivered coupe.
Unfortunately 30 years ago I didn't think to save these original items and it got thrown away.
I also know of another 59 car that has it's original folder and documents that came with the car when it was picked up from the factory, so I think Porsche were still using up their stocks through the T2 period.
Here are a couple of pictures of the new folder I have made.

I have found a source in Germany for the original Burgundy leather effect card and have just finished this prototype.
If there is an interest I can make a small batch.
Regards
Drew

Hi Guys, thank you for your interest.
I have only produced one prototype and it took me all afternoon, everything is hand cut, creased and die stamped (using my garage hydraulic press) so I'm not sure what to charge.
At that pace I would be thinking of charging £60 but do you think that is too much?
I am going to try making 5 today and see if I can speed up the process.

Drew:
Very nice product! Regarding your question about price: figure time and materials for yourself, but factor in demand as well and make it fair to yourself. I for one have no idea what it takes to make this, but the folder looks quite smart!

I'd be in for two if you charge $50 American before postage, so please add me to your list as interested in at least one.
Best,

60 pounds is around 80 US dollars. I don't think that is too much for a hand made unobtainable item not being reproduced by anyone else.

If your manual is an accurate reproduction in terms of colour, size, creases. etc, then the price is ok.

I can't see the creases clearly at your picture. Could you compare them with the original ones at the picture? Have you used a creaser machine?

Thanks.

Hi Etienne

Thank you for your photo.
Here is a close up of my second prototype (before it has been folded and glued).

Looks pretty close to your original.

I am using old fashioned book binding techniques, all creases are formed using a bone folder and a template with grooves cut into it to give crisp folds.

I love what Drew is doing. If I could make two improvement suggestions they would be to match the paper color to the originals, more red than purple/maroon. Etienne and I have discussed this in the past and to adjust the artwork on the Porsche crest embossing. Not trying to critique the wonderful work just giving some constructive feedback. I have a large collection of originals so am pretty will versed with them.
