Wheel I.D.

#1 Post by Bil Brown »

I just picked up a 904 wheel from a Registry brother that is ALL aluminum, hoop and center, riveted. 6Kx15......stamped in the center"....KPZ.....5/65.....3.7.....699016......6Kx15, and "LM", which I think might mean "lightmetal".......anyone ever seen or heard of such a wheel?? It weighs 9.75 lbs.

Bill,

My 57 Carrera Speedster the one with the aluminum hardtop used 4 steel
alloy wheels 5x15 that would clear the hat on the annular disk brakes the
4.5 would not go over the annular brake hat all 4 were dated 5-65 and a
couple of years later I found a 4x15 to use as a spare also dated 5-65 I
never checked if it would clear the hat? I figured that the factory made a
run of steel alloy wheels in 5-65?

Regards,

Rolly

Last week I emailed Marco Marinello about this wheel. He was at the swapmeet in Stuttgart this past weekend where there were a lot of oldtimer factory people. He asked Peter Falk about it and they all seem to agree that this all aluminum wheel is/was a "cheater" spare, never intended to be on a car. None had seen this type of wheel before. One interesting note, the KPZ part number 699016 is, in fact, the part number for the 906 front alloy/steel wheel 7Kx15, as Peter Hoffman had confirmed for me.

I posted a thread on the early911 registry about this wheel. Some very interesting info has been posted, here`s the latest from Jon Bunin quoting the Paul Frere book. Looks like this one may have escaped the factory wheel polizei!

Just when you think you have heard everything ...

"LM" stands for leicht metall. That's German for light metal.

So is Paul Frere's explanation correct, that it was for short races, or is it really just for show as a spare tire holder?
