Sound deadening material - experience?

#1 Post by Helge Tielker »

Guys, who can advise me on materials for sound and vibration reduction underneath the carpet?
e.g. Soundproof Kit, Interior Body Complete, 356B T5, Coupe or others ....
does anyone knows a supplier in Europe too?

cheers Helge

i have just finished my 1957 coupe..
in hind sight.. I would have done the entire interior in Dynamat or equivalent like "Be Quiet" as the interior carpet and upholstery cover all of that
then use the sound deadening kit product from stoddard for the front and rear trunks, and the exterior portion above the transmission - two pieces there..
I found the stick in product very easy to work with .. and it really molds and sticks well..

I am also working on this aspect .. I see the tech & resto guide from the registry mentions a mercedes product (similar to modern bitumen sheet type products but with a weave type print on/in it) - trying to track that down else will use dynamat type with the 'foam/vinyl' type overlay or a felt like this one - uk co - last one on page ... http://www.automobiletrim.com/sound-proofing.html

here is another product that is a possibility..
I applied it to the horizontal and vertical surfaces on the rear of the interior.. ie around the transmission hump and on the rear fire wall..

Ensolite is far superior anywhere you don't need original appearance; under carpets, behind upholstery panels etc. Lightweight and non flammable unlike Duramat, bituthane and other heavy crude products. Various thicknesses, 4' wide sheet, sold by the foot. Cheaper than Duromat & absorbs sound better than the old "horsehair" coco fiber or tarpaper.

Does this look original? I suspect that it may be (T6). It appears to be bitumen based? I have put a little Penetrol around the edges as a preventative.

Helge,
We used Dynomat to help cut down on road noise and soften the look of the carpeting.
The upholstery gentleman used a sharp set of shears, a heat gun and a rubber mallet for installation.
I asked him to put it anywhere that was covered with carpet and would not impede functionality, i.e. heater ducts, gear shift mechanism.

Interesting Dennis thanks:
- was it a noticeable difference in cabin noise?
- Is it much heavier than standard deadening?
- would you suggest the 1/2 ot 1/4 in?

I'd ask the same re impact Victor
ie what were you impressions after fitting? Could/Did you compare to before?

Hi, Matt. Ensolite's about half the weight of the other stuff, absorbs sound better and is fireproof. Half inch where it fits, quarter inch in tighter spots. I have 1" thick under the floors of my plane and half inch on the walls and firewall.

Since you're in SA, Spruce's link to the US store may help: <http://www.aircraftspruce.com>

they are very helpful and speak good english ;)

Christian is willing to do a discount for 356reg members so contact him if suits
I'm just working out how much of the 1/4 and 1/2 in to order.

It's about Eur15 a foot (which is 4 ft wide).
1/4 - http://www.aircraftspruce.eu/super-soun ... --blck.htm
1/2 - http://www.aircraftspruce.eu/super-soun ... -black.htm

christian.bayram@aircraftspruce.eu

I priced the mercedes part number stuff listed in the reg handbook and it is about 10x the price

I also found some very dense and paintable Wurth product which is aimed at similar and I think will work in engine bay.
It is pre-glued, with a bitumen base and vinyl and a heat proof woven silver front (paintable). 6 roughly 1/2m sq sheets in a box for $20.

• Heavy bitumen pads, aluminium coated, self-adhesive.• Highly adhesive.
• Reinforced against breaking. • Can be painted over.
• Resistant to water, light acid and alkaline solutions.
• High temperature resistance– 30 oC to + 80oC (1 hour +180oC).

Matt,
It is hard for me to compare before and after installation only because it was so long of a restoration.
Also my car is a cab so I would think there would be more road noise anyway. It does soften
the look and the feel of the carpeting if that makes any sense.
Sorry I could not be more helpful.

When I redid my interior it was all dynamat on floors and walls under carpet. Set from autos intl included all tar covered horsehair sound deader for floors and perfectly cut carpet. A littlr sweat tugging and pulling but great products
