factory VIN plate changeover.....

#1 Post by Greg Stout »

My T-5, VIN 108970, built Sept 30, 1959, has a "356A" precast VIN plate, down next to the right side of the gas tank. It is duly stamped "108970", which is, of course, the 53rd T-5 off the assembly line. At a recent Zone 7 concours, I had the opportunity to check the plate on # 109354, and it had the correct precast "356B" VIN plate.
I wonder how many early T-5's have the 356A plates ????? Was it a simple case of grabbing one of the 'old' ones from the wrong box, or was the factory purposefully using up the "356A" plates on the early cars. OR, is there a never before discovered transition model, that nobody discusses....

THE 356 A HIGH BUMPER MODEL ?????? (you know I'm Kidding, right?)

Any other early T-5's out there with a 356A VIN plate ????? Brett Johnson, are you listening ?????

:?: :?: :shock: :) :D :wink:

Due to overwhelming response....I can surmise that either there aren't any other early B cars (108XXX) out there to check this out on, or, mine is a one time "oops" caused by Dieter, after a 2 beer lunch break.
I just thought someone else, beside me, may find this an interesting oddity. Like my S-90 motor, in my '63, was able stamped, 616/12 then over that, 616/7.....weird !

I have T-5 VIN 108935. It has a precast 356B VIN plate.

Yes there are transition models with odd details. Porsche always used up parts.
1965 356C 2000 BMW 740i Sport 1967 Honda CL77 There is never enough time to do it right, but always enough time to do it over.

...no rhyme or reason, either. Which ever box was open next to the line....those parts went on. Sorta fun though, really. Pisses off the Concours Judges ;-}
