Location of Speedometer

#1 Post by Stephen Hoskins »

I have a 56 Speedster vin# 82195 that I entered at the Dana Point Concours yesterday. One of the comments that I got, that I never heard before, was that my speedometer was in the wrong location. I have had this car at Dana Point for many shows and never heard this comment before. Currently the speedometer is on the right of the tach, with the combo gauge on the left of the tach. The judge said it should be reversed with the combo gauge. Are speedsters different than coupes?

Hi, Steve:

On page 95 of Bret Johnson's book, "A Restorer's Guide to Authenticity", he states the following under "Placement": "Cars with two gauges positioned the speedometer on the left with the tachometer or clock on the right. Early 356As had the speedometer on the left, tachometer in the center and cluster gauge on the right. At the T 2 body change, the cluster gauge has moved to the left and the speedometer to the right. This arrangement remained unaltered through the 356C model."

Thanks, Mike. I guess I was so used to later models, that I did not realize the T-1 were different. Even Jessie has not mentioned it!!

Glad to help, Steve. I had to look it up as I wasn't sure either.

All the best,

It has to be really difficult being a judge and having to know/recognize the details and authenticity of the various years and models.

Thanks to all of you that donate your time organizing these events and serving as judges.

Mike,
I think you might know this judge, Ed Rutherford.

I do, Steve. He's caught other items on other cars that have been over-looked including incorrect fuel pumps, etc. Give him a call. I'm sure he'd be happy to talk to you about your car.
