Difference in 356 rear drum brake backing plates

#1 Post by Michael Foster »

In going through some parts I came across 2 different style rear backing plates. One set has round reinforcement around bearing cap bolt area. Second set has rectangular reinforcement that runs through bearing cap area all the way through brake cylinder area.

What model year and when was each style used?

Michael......if it looks like this one, it`s Pre-A. I robbed that pic from "the big auction site".......with a REDICULOUS price for the pair!

Yes, two look like picture, other two. Have reinforcement around where bearing cap would bolt. Are you sure those are pre a the extra reinforcement would appear to make them stiffer which should make them later ?

The bracing was needed because the main plate was thinner than the later ones.

I like the earlier plates, they`re definately stronger. I`ve got a lot of "A" plates that are distorted and bent in the center around the bolt holes.
