S-90 fan

#1 Post by Roland Paetsch »

Is it correct to assume that the early S-90s (i.e. T5) had a 16 blade fan, and the S-90 T6 had 28 blades?

Duane Spencer seems to indicate that all S-90s had the 28 blade fan.

The cooling fan was normally an off-the-shelf VW part. The 28-blade fan was cut into VW production on 8 November 1960.

However, it's possible that the 28-blade fan was a Porsche modification adopted by VW and that the early S-90s received 28-blade fans that were custom builds (which doesn't answer your question).

VW went with the 28 when they moved from the 36hp engine to 40 hp in 1960.

Was the 28 blade fan the reason a VW 40 hp lasts about half as many miles as a 36 hp? :P

We use the 16-blade in the race cars. It definitely pumps air better at high speeds.
Low-rpm engines, I'm sure, benefit from more blades.

Hmm,i wonder if Porsche went with the 28 then just because that was what was available from VW and not because it was better for the engines??

I'd say that's probably correct.
