I am a newbie to the site but have had my 65C since 1982. My grandfather bought it in 1979.
I am trying to determine if numbers match but I cannot figure it out.
Any help would be great...

It is not completely numbers matching as the main engine number, by the pulley, is missing. It would be stamped right above "Made in Germany". It must have a replacement block or at least timing cover.

Check this tech article for locating chassis numbers which should match those on your hinge cover. The paint number (lower tab on the hinge plate) can only be confirmed with a COA from Porsche NA or a Kardex.

Your transmission number is the latest that I have now for my transmission number log. It was built in May, 1965; so it's one of the last ones. On the left side of the trans is a small circle with the casting date in it; top number is the week, bottom number is the year. That would be helpful for the list. Thanks.

Welcome, lots of information here and people willing to share.
I have the same issue with a 62 engine, the car was purchased in Germany from a dealer in Kaiserslautern and before shipping to the US the engine was replaced by the original selling Dealer, no numbers on the third piece.
This is according to the original owner.

A definitive way to determine if the engine and transmission (and other equipment) are original is to buy from PCNA a certificate of authenticity. Cost is around $100. I think there is a discount for 356 Registry and PCA members.
Because your third piece, or timing cover, has no numbers (that is where the engine number is stamped), at least that cover has been replaced, and probably the whole engine.

The engine block appears to have been repainted with aluminum radiator paint at some point, as it was painted with the hardware in place.
If the third piece has "232" stamped at the top, then all three pieces are a matched replacement case.
Is there a five-digit number and engine type (616/XX) stamped on the case, directly under the oil filter canister?
