replacement engine

Would the Kardex clear this up? My car had its engine changed in the factory and the Kardex notes this event.

Unfortunately, i don't have the Kardex of the car, only a COA.
No mention of an engine replacement on it.

I agree to the persons who told, that the original number was grinded off.
You can see a step between "Made in Germany" and the Number. I saw
many AT or KD markings, this is not like the oters. In my storage some third
pieces show fantasynumbers like 03560 or something. I think that someone
with a bit of knowledge stamped a similar than the original number on it.
Perhaps for better selling the car or unstamping a stolen engine-nobody knows.

Rembember in the past it was very hard to get informations about this cars,
today with two clicks you have a lot of inforamtions.

I was aware about this before i bought the car

the odd thing is, that the engine was replace in 1976, at a time when these cars were worthless

According to a annotation by hand done by a previous owner, the replacement engine was originally a 356A engine and "my" engine is now built in a 356C cabriolet. The replacement was made for some unknown reasons at a time when both cars where somewhere in Texas.

Another strange thing is that the number is "out-of-range" and 11 numbers above the highest serial number of a 356C engine.
Why "invent" a new number ???
In my opinion, a dishonest guy would have (re)stamped the original number. I hardly imagine that the unstamping was done with the intention of deceiving a future buyer

KD means Kundendienst (customer service) and identifies as I know a rebuilt engine by Porsche Customer service.
AT means Austauschmotor (replacement motor) - which means a new motor from the factory in replace for an old one.

AT meant also a new motor number. I am not 100% sure about the serial number by KD, as I know even when not necessary the third place has been always replaced with a new one stating your original motornumber with KD * P* original number .....

if I am wrong I am keen to learn what is right.

Sorry Helge but I think you are wrong/ KD refers to an engine replaced under warranty. It is not necessarily the same # with a KD before it. KD engines are noted on Kardex as this is basically a warranty card. AT engines were made available to dealers for sale of a complete replacement engine.The 2nd owner of my car bought an AT motor complete from Stoddard when the original engine was no longer running well. Luckily for me he also kept the original engine. See attached Kardex where KD engine number is different than original engine on the Kardex.

were they stamped by the dealers ? The factory ?

As far as I have been able to tell the AT engines were factory rebuilt. Unsure about how numbers were chosen.
