replacement engine

#1 Post by ZIMMERMANN JEan-Luc »

Hi

i'm new on this forum. I bought several weeks ago a Porsche 356C coupe.
The car is matching number except the engine, that is stamped ATxPx733208
I didn't find a lot of explanation how to decode this VIN

AT seems to be for an engine replacement. But was it a factory or a dealer replacement ?
Obviously, the original VIN number has been erased. All other markings also have been removed. This is for me the clue that it's an engine providing from another car that was reconditioned.
Notice the stars have been replaced by a "X". Does somebody still have seen that kind of marking ?
As far i know, the highest range attributed to a 616/15 engine is 733028 -> 733197. My engine has number 733208 (11 above the highest engine officially produced)
Did Porsche factory continue to count ahead and attribute next free number to replacement engines ?

Any information is welcome

Thanks in advance

Jean-Luc

A quick Google search turned up the following: KD indicates a factory rebuilt engine. AT indicates a factory replaced engine.

I also have concerns, as I have never seen the factory use an X like in this case.

According to a hand annotation that i found in an old workshop manual that was remaining in the car, the engine was replaced in January 76
Previous engine number was 711209

At this period, the car was registered in Texas

The fonts on that engine are wrong too. That 7 is not a German 7.

My car had an AT motor in it when I bought it. The AT motor was purchased complete from Stoddards by owner #2 of my car. KD motors were factory exchange. AT motors were dealer exchange. I believe both were rebuilt at the factory. My AT motor and further discussion in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=36948 I do not believe the X was ever used in number stamping by Porsche in 356s

At least you were told your engine was not original. So you were not deceived. Whoever stamped that 3rd piece was not fully versed in how Porsche stamped 3rd pieces though.
