My engine has no numbers or letters at all. I was always led to believe it was a dealer replacement. Where do no numbers fall in?

Mike: it could have been an original (NOS) unused engine case/third piece. I recently bought a NOS/NIB (New In Box) 912 case and third piece. The third piece is blank.

Not sure ... even if he didn't have the right font, in my opinion, he was aware on Porsche usages and procedures. If not, why making the effort of erasing all casting numbers and bring on a new assembly number that is corresponding with the numbering convention of Porsche ?

"my engine" is now in a 65C cabrio somewhere in California. I got in touch with the owner of this car. He told me that the car was owned by someone in Texarkana, Texas in 1984. So, the engine moved from my car to this car sometime between 1976 and 1984 and the operation was done in Texas

I'm wondering how many shops or dealers had the ability to do this. Probably not a lot ...

Just because that paper that you found has another engine serial number on it doesn't mean it's the original to the car. You won't know that until you get a COA. You may be chasing the wrong engine. Best to be sure.

no internal no. Looks like it has also been removed

Engine type is correct (616/15)

Both the assembly ("internal") number AND the serial number having been ground off. That almost sounds as though it was possibly a stolen engine back in the day...... Not necessarily, but awfully suspicious. No reason to grind off the assembly number unless getting rid of evidence.

It looks to me like the 3 piece case set was blank, and the engine builder stamped the numbers you see. With no internal #, it is very unlikely to be factory built. I do not see enough evidence to say any original numbers were ground off.
As far as the question 'did the factory continue to use serial #'s in the sequence', I can only say that I know they did with 1969 911 engines, but so far no proof of other instances.

Right above the "Made in Germany" it is quite obviously milled to remove the old number, looks quite different from a blank one.

Would the Kardex clear this up? My car had its engine changed in the factory and the Kardex notes this event.

The Kardex is unlikely to reflect a home-brew renumbering job.

my car does not have its original engine. I would like to search and see if I can locate it. However, I do not know what the correct engine number for my car is - 1964 356 #215801
It has a Registry badge on the car so presumably a previous owner was a member.
Can anyone help - Many thanks

David: in order to find out the original engine number for your car, you'll need to obtain either a Certicate of Authenticity (COA) or a copy of the Kardex.

If you go to the VIN tab at the top of our site, you can enter your chassis number and see the ranges of the numbers for your engine depending upon the model.
