ventilator housing/ sheet metal/ engine tin

#1 Post by Helge Tielker »

Hello to all of from Holland,
we are looking for some sheetmetal, to be honest ALL the sheetmetal for the motor my son (12) has purchased from a well known registry member.
It is a 75PS Motor - the question is now, where do we get the metals (Original ones not new as my son said) as well HOW can we see it fits this motor?

cheers Helge

BTW; the pic on the left, my sons feets when he was 7 days young ;)

Helge:

If you are talking about the engine tin, several of our vendors have original fan shroud pieces available. I assume you are talking about the front and rear pieces, the side tin, the carburator tin, and the 4 pieces that attach to the fan shroud. One vendor that comes to mind is Klasse 356. Another option is to check eBay and The Samba.

I'm happy to hear those baby feet will be pushing the pedals on a 356!

Hi,

see on samba.com
What type of motor is it ? Do you have the engine number ?
You can find the list of the parts:
1.) http://www.jomaparts.com/en/parts/catalog/porsche356
2.) classic-parts.com

The engine tin changed over the years but I think the various pieces are more-or-less interchangeable.

I think the 616/2 was a 1600 cc Super engine unique to the 356A (while the 616/1 was a Normal/Damen engine in both 356As and 356Bs). You might want to get engine tin appropriate for the car the engine will go into.

I'm not 100% certain when all the engine tin changes happened but I can name a few variations:

Rear piece:
  1. pre-As did NOT have horns for blowing warm air towards the carburetors
  2. Early cars [pre-As and As ?] had a tab that could be lifted to insert a starting crank into the pulley on the end of the crankshaft. Of course, Porsches didn't have any holes in the body to insert a starting crank.
  3. Some late cars had the "European" heater with exhaust heat exchangers and a different rear piece.
Fan shroud:
  1. Early cars did not have a little indent at top center [through 356A?]
  2. Late cars had a little indent at top center
  3. Early cars had a screen in front of the fan
  4. Late cars had a "volute" (I think that's what it's called) for the fan intake
Side piece under left carburetor:
  1. Late cars had a tiny bracket with a screw which may be there to secure a fuel line support
  2. Early cars did not.
There are probably other differences I don't know about.

Jim, Heiner, Mike thank you so far, we keep searching. I guess when restoring and bringing back this motor originality is very important.

Searched it on the net:
Engine number 88213 is a 1600 S (Type 616/2 T5), part of range 85551 to 88320.

This engine was originally fitted to a car as follows:
•1960 (built 1960) T5 B cabriolet (Reutter) with a serial number between 152944 and 154560.
•1960 (built 1960) T5 B coupe (Reutter) with a serial number between 110238 and 114650.
•1960 (built 1960) T5 B roadster (Drauz) with a serial number between 87392 and 88920.

So I need T5B sheet metal ;)

Guys, yes Mike for sure Bill really deserve the good guy award.
My son just bought buy a German fellow a - what he thought and was announced as a 356 616 fanshroudhousing (is this the right word?) - but it seems to be from an Industrial motor. Does anyone know the exact difference between both? What do we have to change to make it usable for the 616/2 motor?

Helge.........here`s some tin I can give to you for your son`s project. These pieces should all be proper for a Zenith equipped engine. Let me know if these will work for you. They all will need a good beadblasting and paint, but all good pieces. Send me your shipping address and I`ll ship the parts and then I`ll have a total for the shipping......Bill

As far as the industrial motor fan housing, I believe the industrial fan shrouds did not have any of the bracketry for the dual carburetor linkage as the industrial motors had a single, centrally located carburetor. Conversion would probably be more costly or complicated than it would be worth.
