356 C engine gold plated parts

#1 Post by Guido Kwikkers »

My engine was restored by previous owner (partly done by himself and a porsche classic restoration firm).
I noticed that some parts are gold plated, according to my information no gold plated material was used on 356 (C).

Or are there exceptions? Otherwise that means I must exchange some of the parts and have them redone to be silver plated.
I attached some pictures.

Thanks in advance

My guess is the parts were yellow cad-plated as on 912's and early 911's. Not correct for a 356.

And although Cad 1 or silver CAD looks great and wears well if you really want to be 100% correct those parts were probably originally bright zinc plated. I think that the pieces holding the brake lines on the transaxle were maybe Cad 2 plated on C's but nothing else. The Maestro loved to Cad 2 plate a few things though. See Brad Ripley's comments in this link: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=39884&hilit=cad+plating

Doug, Harry went way beyond Cad 2. He actually had pieces real gold plated.

There was little or no yellow cadmium (or yellow zinc) on 1965 911s. At most the special machine screws holding the float bowls to the manifolds and the metal parts of the "turnbuckles" the adjusting part the linkage on the Solex 40PIs were yellow.

I assume the same holds for the first 912s. I'm not sure when yellow became common.

Thanks for the clarification, Jim. Hopefully someone with experience with the early 911's and 912's will weigh in on when yellow cad was used.

Good seeing you at the Lit Show today.

Quite right.
The only gold cad item on my original C cab are the transaxle brake line clamps (per Doug). All other plating is silver cad - such as engine linkages, fuel lines, valve covers, fasteners, etc.

Mike,

A small sample:
'67 911S (COA mid-Sept. 1966): lots of yellow CAD.
'67 912 (COA mid-Dec. 1966): no yellow CAD
'68 012 (dealer receipt early Oct. 1968): lots of yellow CAD.
