Hello,
first, i know this was asked many times before... i have spent a lot of time reading a few threads on the registry... but there does not seem to be any definite answer or consensus...
Let me sum up what i have read,
(1) Earlier versions (up until 1963) did not have any date on it, after 1963 the date was put in the lip (Mike Acebo post)
(2) the crest could either have Orange Bars or Red Bars, per Chuck Stoddards discussion on the topic, that multiple manufacturing companies were used at the time, and items were not "standardized" and could have variations. It was his opinion, that the color was meant to be an Orange shade. (Sebastian Gaeta post)
(3) round marking with "KPZ" put in the middle with a rubber stamp (from Jim Stephenson NOS cap post)
and finally, How to tell the real ones from reproductions....
I have these two photos, are either of these real? One has tabs for the badge sticking through it, the other doesn't
(my favorite answer comes from Thomas Sottile: "The real ones are rusty")
