1954 VOLTAGE REGULATOR PLACEMENT

#1 Post by Michael Banchero »

I own a 54 coupe #51857 that has its VOLTAGE REGULATOR mounted under the dash. Is this a factory placement for a period of time or something done by a previous owner?
thanks

Yes, the voltage regulator was mounted under the dash for a short time. According to info I've gleaned from posts in the Talk forums, the VR was moved from the top of the generator to under the dash in January '54 and then to the final resting place on the engine bulkhead at the end of April '54, when the '54 model year started. So the under-dash VR cars are part of the 'late-'53' models. James Davies has provided most of the information on the pre-A's, so I defer to him on the details.
Does your car have any of the original wire harness in it, and if it does, is it cloth covered wire? I believe the '54 MY started in May '54. The pre-A's lineage is very confusing ...

Hi Michael,

Yes, coupes with (roughly) chassis numbers 51608 to 52029 (cabs 60386 to 60549) had the regulator under the dash from the factory. There should be a bracket welded in by the passengers knees with 4 screw holes in it for mounting the regulator. The regulator was the Bosch RS/UA 160/6/13 for most of these, though the early ones (through coupe 51694 and cab 60404) used an RS/UA 140/6/xx regulator, though I've never seen one of these myself.

As Greg says, this corresponds to cars with Kardex dates Dec 1953 through April 1954, roughly.
