Identifying the mongrel

#1 Post by Jim Nelson »

Just came across an interesting engine. We need a little help here identifying the bits. We think it may be a VW case with various Pre-A parts, but not knowing that much about Pre-A's hinders that line of thought. It's a 3-piece case, but the engine number is on the side of the third piece instead of where it's supposed to be, and it's a 616/xx (can't make it out). Anyone recognize anything ?

Being a three piece case means it is not a VW case. The generator/regulator appears to be VW, but not much more to see. The valve covers are the Porsche variety?

Industrial engines were numbered on the side of the third piece.

Let's see, three piece case, dual carbs, regulator on the generator, solex carbs, but 32' not 34's. Its a 1300S 506/2 , it my still have the roller crank. That is not a mongrel it's a pretty rare engine.

I think Vic has identified it a an industrial case, the rest is unknown without taking it apart. And the regulator is VW, different from the early Porsche one. It has the carb heat pipes in the lower air channels, I don't think those went with 32mm Solexes (edit, they could have) - might be an actual mongrel.

I don't recall 34mm carbs on any 356 engine, so those 32s are correct. Carb heat started with the A series.
If the 616/xx number is on the right side second case boss, then it's a 1960 or later. Through 1959 they were stamped 1600 or 1600S.

This also has a fairly large bottom pulley:
(Love the various fasteners on the generator stand.)

with a hard-to-read number on it:

I'll attempt some better shots of the case number and the 616/xx number tomorrow. This didn't show up on Eric's serial number listing as 356 engine, but I'm guessing he wouldn't list the industrial engines. Number on the side of the case is P 02026.

Thank you, Vic--also finally got the case type--616/6, so industrial engine with some pre-A bits attached. Will probably separate the pre-A bits from the industrial engine and away they go.

Don't actually see any pre-A unique parts, rather they look like early "A" parts, like carbs, manifolds, fuel pump etc, and the generator, regulator look like VW parts, also a few oddball parts like aircleaners with unknown origin.
