356A Fan Shroud ID

#1 Post by donnsny »

I recently uncovered this fan shroud and am requesting help identifying it. I believe it is 356A with a VW generator attached. Is there any chance that it is pre A? I was thinking not because of the presence of the thermostat bellows but it was mixed in with some other pre A parts so i just didnt know for sure. Thanks for any help on this.

Donn,
I can't make out the first letters on your generator but the 160 watt unit would be correct for the T-1 shroud as Vic has said. I'm pretty sure period VW generators were stamped with the VW logo instead of Bosch. According to Bosch dealer inventory recommendations from 1956 the 160 watt generators were used from November '53. My '55 1500N originally had the 160 watt generator - with the earlier shroud. From the same source, earlier cars through October '53 came with the 130 watt generators.

Porsche did not mount the regulator on the generator by the T-1.

The generator used on Porsches 1954 through late 1959 was the LJ/GE 160/6/2500 L2. The rectangular regulators (mounted on the firewall) for this generator were

RS/UA 160/6/13 end of 1953 through mid-1954 (mounted with 4 screws under the dash)
RS/UA 160/6/15 mid-1954 through late 1956
RS/UA 160/6/24 from late 1956

I believe the VW generator from 1954 onward was the LJ/REF 160/6/2500 L19 (or L17 or L21). It looks like that's the one you have, as you thought.

Thanks for all your help. The one I have is marked LS/REF 160/6/2500 L17. It has a 8L date code. Which I understand is Aug. 55. Looks like a I will separate it from the fan shroud and e bay it to an early VW fan.
Thanks, Donn Snyder
