356 head rest - with or without a zipper?

#1 Post by Donald Pirch »

I have a 1960 coupe and have a headrest kit with foam pad, cross bar installed within pad, chrome supports, etc. The only headrests I've seen have no zipper. The kit a bought has a zipper and recommendations on how to install. I like no zipper because it looks cleaner, although it is positioned between the headrest and the seat and cannot be seen. What is correct for my year car?

One is a factory option and the other is an aftermarket set that was a period accessory. IIRC, the one with the zipper is the aftermarket.

Also the tips of the chrome brackets on the originals have a slight curve on the ends.

The distances between the supports are a bit wider on the factory headrest. The aftermarket is a bit narrower. If one set of attaching hardware is already on the seat back then that distance will dictate which headrest to use that is unless they are moved leaving holes in the material. You could have your headrests
done at a shop that specializes in these cars and do away with the zipper.
