Headlight bucket color

#1 Post by Jim Nelson »

What color/brand paint have we been using for the greyish-tan of the headlight bucket?

O.k., Jim, I'll weigh in. I used a zinc-rich, cold galvanizing from a spray can. The finish is a bit grainy but after it dried, I wiped it down with a terry cloth rag. It's more gray than silver in appearance. This is in a '63 B. Earlier and maybe later cars may be more silver in color.

Hopefully my post will stimulate the discussion and you can get some good suggestions.

This has also been discussed at the early 911S Registry. The SWB 911 headlights aren't 100% interchangeable with 356s, but the color's the same or very close:

The very similar VW headlights have been discussed, too:

I was lucky enough to find NOS (or at least OEM) headlights for my 911 and my 356 & VW don't need paint so I never solved the problem myself.

Thanks, guys for the replies. The reason I ask is that both Rustoleum Soldier Grey and their American Accents Stone Grey seem to have been superseded by ....something. So finding the close satin finish has, so far, been interesting but futile.
