Hi all

I wanted to find out about Houndstooth seats in 356's as my 1963 has them fitted.

Was this an option and how unusual is it?

Thanks
Andy

Denis had a '63 with houndstooth.

Your car sounds beautiful, have you ordered the COA or do you have access to the kardex for the car?

Sebastian, I changed those seats to grey corduroy. The car is now owned by Frank Koch south of Pittsburgh. I can't ever remember houndstooth "back in the day" and I hate the stuff(opinions vary) so I changed it...oh, and the COA said grey cord. We are at MO. See you there.

Here is a bad photo of the seats- apparently original although i'm pretty sure the COC says leatherette or cord as well, will check in the morning.

I've recently had contact with the original owner so i'm going to check these seats were in the car when he purchased it.

Eastern market version? I stopped at a gas station in southern Germany once. A guy pulled up next to me with Hungarian plates. His pants matched your seats, his sports jacket was red and yellow check.

I saw a Carrera Cabriolet represented as being Ferry Porsche's auctioned at Russo & Steele (see viewtopic.php?f=1&t=15717).

It had houndstooth seats when it sat outside on the street in Monterey. It was definitely not the original upholstery--it was Camaro material not German wool houdstooth. Maybe there was no houndstooth to be had when it needed new upholstery.

You can also see it in the on-line catalog http://issuu.com/russo-and-steele/docs/ ... ineupdated It's pages 26 & 27.

Jim,

That is a pretty well known car that is fully documented as Ferry'spersonal car. It was used as a test mule for new engines and even received a T-6 front clip while he owned it. It started out life as a T-5. Ferry loved the houndstooth and had it installed.

Cool. All I knew about the car was Russo & Steele's description. I'm not calling them a bunch of liars, but an auction house description isn't what I would normally call the most reliable possible source.

I do know the difference between German wool houndstooth and Camaro houndstooth. There was no German wool houndstooth to be had when I got my 911 restored.

My car is a factory car - But the original COC says leatherette cord. It must have been changed at the factory.

I'm awaiting confirmation from the chap who purhcased from the factory to see if it was in the car when he purchased it. I think he is gong to send me some picture i hope.

I had a red C in the early 70s that had houndstooth which I assumed was original as it was unrestored and not particularly nice, and not that old at the time. Denis Moore lives near me, maybe it ended up in his hands.

Martin, I bought Denis's car, pictures above, COA above, not factory houndstooth.

My father had a brand new cord insert 356 that needed the driver's insert replaced due to wear in less than 2 years. In the '70s some of the cool kids with 911s had houndstooth so I wouldn't be surprised if worn cord wasn't replaced with houndstooth by the poor 356 owner wanting to be just as cool as the ritzy 911 owners.

No matter what, if you didn't buy the car new, you have no idea what was really original.
