Factory Talbot Bullet Mirrors

#1 Post by Brett Johnson »

Around 18 years ago, I asked about cars fitted with factory supplied Talbot mirrors (not aftermarket ones with the green plastic spots) and got three inconclusive responses about diameter. Just wondered how many I can get now -- well, hopefully not inconclusive ones. Oh yes, I also need a decent color photo of one for Authenticity IV -- without the Moiré pattern.

I know about the Aero, Ponti=Stable, and Durant. Talbot mirrors were wide;y available in the aftermarket, and stuck on a lot of sports cars in the 1960s. They were popular on race cars because of the aero shape. I had always assumed that he Talbots i have were all aftermarket,(none have the green dot) and that the one on my SC was probably dealer or first owner added. What makes you think that he factory ever installed these?

Talbot had many variations over the years. The green dots were a later evolution and before that there were differing engravings. There is a website about them. I doubt that Porsche installed many but the engraving should have matched the Talbot made that year.

The diameter of the exposed area of glass is 4". I happen to have this one listed in the Classifieds Section.

Let me know if you need anything photographed or measured.

Talbot made the Point-Stabil-style mirror that was fitted to many 356As and 356Bs. It is illustrated in the 356B accessories book #9125 and you can read Talbot on the back of the mirror. The way the mirror mounts to the post is very different than the Point-Stabil.

So, Porsche had a relationship with Talbot and the bullet ones are listed on some kardexes, generally being supplied either singularly or in pairs and most times un-mounted. As I recall, the Roadster in the photo was documented -- but that was 30 years ago. Do note the small post.

That is if I read my '65 COA correctly which says "Talbot Mirror-right side" and also says "1 Outer rearview mirror".

The car only had the outside rear view (driver side) when purchased in 1979 and I have never had any desire to re-mount the Talbot.
