Do these keys look original?

#1 Post by John Baker »

The son of the OG owner sent me some keys he found while cleaning his garage. I was thrilled when I got them in the mail. Do you guys think these are the real deal? One is a door/ignition key and the other fits the glove box, on a 1960 coupe. One says Huf on it the other porsche. Sorry I couldn't get the pics bigger, can't figure out how.

Hi John,

Here is Tony Eugenio's Key Chart. The B glovebox key on his chart is the 4th from the top.

Huff was the OEM key supplier to Porsche/VW. They look similar, but not exact. That does not mean it is not original though.

Your ignition key (looks like a k300 series) should have a key code on the other side. If it is stamped there, likely that is an original key.

Congrats!

Thanks for the response Sebastian. After looking at that chart, I'm pretty sure the ignition key is original! Awesome! I'm not so sure about the glove box key, it is shaped differently. But if the real one would have said huff on it (from what i gathered from your post) maybe they used different sized ones in 1960.

I figured out how to blow up the pictures and have edited my post so they are better.

Not that anyone here would, but by showing the number on the key, anyone can now make your key with a competent locksmith. (i think)

Cool I found a picture of it at Tony's website. http://www.lockandkeyid.com/hufcglovebox

I wonder if this means it came with the car new?

John
The page that Sebastian attached here is a page that Tony took from a Service Bulletin. As you can see from that page, key blank 644.613.0-1.11 is the shape of the original blank.

I can not post images on the forum, so I have emailed the Service Bulletin to a friend and have asked him to post it on the forum.

John,

The ignition key you picture is absolutely correct for your car. The glove box key, I'm not sure. I wonder if others with similar cars, have similar keys.

Posted below are photos of a key blank matching the chart illustration for A/B glove box locks, and a Huf key for B/C convertible front hoods, the only Huf key illustrated...

Jon,

The picture with the Huf key, do you know if this was a key that came directly from porsche when the car was new? I guess i'm just trying to figure out if Huf keys were blanks cut from dealers, or if factory keys said Huf on them or not.

John,

The HUF keys are original from Porsche for some cars hence the variety in the chart.
Other manufacturers used HUF also.
You have it, it fits, it's original!

This is an interesting thread. I went through my sets of BT6 keys and found what I think are the original ones, by the post above. The numbers match those on the original order form also. Do they seem correct?

Door key, security lock and glove compartment. Also, is it wise to use original keys or just keep them and use copies?

I could go either way.
The original keys hold up well to wear unless on a ring with many others.
In daily use brass keys tend to wear but not to the extent of malfunction.
It's sort of like if you wear a Rolex you can hide or let others see it.
Originals are special!

PS; take care of the key case. Mine went for $3000 USD on e-bay!

Thanks Norm. These old keys have hardly been used and good copies were made over the years.
