 I have looked high and low and everywhere in between to find the grill cloth for those speakers. it is NLA. Another registry member had an idea about using a pair of mens socks turned inside out. The material does have silver threading woven through it. I have checked alot of socks and have not found anything close YET. HA

I spoke to a fellow Registry member from Flint today who has a T-5 coupe. He said that his had round speakers when he received it from his father-in-law many years ago.

They are not in the car now but he has them and said he will send pictures.

If he does I will post them here.

Here's the interior of my '65 model 356C (220256) built in 1964 with the "sorta round speakers." The car was shipped from the factory on Sept. 28, 1964 and delivered to the customer on Feb. 27, 1965
I have no idea if these are original or not. The kardex does not list a radio so it was probably installed by the dealer.

I can get my hands (literally) on a couple of NOS pieces of the original grill cloth material and take some pictures.

If anyone is interested, let me know. I can get to it sometime around the first of the year.

Were all the various speakers for our cars covered with cloth? How is the cloth affixed to the speaker grilles? Is it glued to the face of the chrome grille?

It is not gluded. The grill has three pieces, the mounting ring then the grill and the chrome trim ring. Cut the cloth strech over the grill then place on the mounting ring then trim excess cloth and then snap on the chrome trim ring..Their you go  Keep in mind you have to mount the mounting ring to the car with the speaker then the cloth over the grill and then snap on the trim ring.

My conclusions on speaker grilles......................
Most 64 356Cs and some 65 356Cs had the "sorta round" speakers. The round speakers seem to be pretty prevalent in late production 356Cs. There are many, many exceptions, though. 356Cs with Becker radios seem to have the round speakers no matter what year they are. If you have the "sorta round" speakers in your 356C you will not get any kind of an arguement about correctness. If you have the round speakers in your 64 356C you may arouse the suspicions of the Authenticity Police.
I have a late production 356C with a factory Blaupunkt radio and it has the round speakers. I have a 62 356B Cabriolet with a proper Blaupunkt Frankfurt US (T series with green face) radio and it has round speakers, as well. The speakers are there 'cause I put them there 30 years ago. I'm sure that the next owner of my Cab, after I croak. will swear that they were factory installed.

I am the second owner of a 63 Karmann coupe 213246 that left the factory about March of 63. I've owned this coupe since 1975. It has the sorta round speakers. The cloth material is silver/grey with the silver threads.
