Seat Belt anchors on T2

Seat belt anchors are not present on my T2. Does anyone know if they were ever an option for these cars?

Ernie, it is my understanding that Porsche did not make seat belt anchor points part of the body structure until 1963 in the T6 cars.

A customer could special order the factory to install seat belts in a 356, as seat belts were an option (see Charlie White's website) but it was rarely done. The Germans called seat belts "chicken belts" and they had a very long word for that which I can't remember. Typically seat belts were installed by the dealer, who just drilled holes in the floor pan where they thought appropriate.

Ernie, there is very specific locations for factory installed anchors. I wouldn't recommend just drilling holes in the pan wherever you think it is appropriate.

Diagram below is from the 356B workshop manual supplement. Factory installed belts prior to 1962 were anchored to the floor with U-shaped shackles, not eyebolts. Shackles for 356A and early B cars were 60mm wide, and belts looped directly through them; later B shackles were 35mm wide, and belts were clipped onto them. Early B floors had platforms for these, stamped into the sheetmetal.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to be driving the car some and it is a necessary retrofit in Ga. where I live. I recently looked at a friend's 63 T6 Euro car and the anchors are there. However, the anchor loop studs are 10mmx1.50mm, and the nuts are actually welded to the body, so a backing washer and nut are not necessary.

The factory did offer seat belts as an accessory as early as 1956 in the 356-A Accessory Catalog. They were also listed in the June 1957 Accessories Price-List and in subsequent Accessory Catalogs and price lists. Seat Belts are not referenced in the 356-A workshop manual and later supplement, nor in any of the 356-A Service Bulletins. They are first mentioned in a T-6 Supplement 356-B workshop manual, S TRA 19-26, some pages dated April 1963. These pages detail the location and installation of seat belts, including specific details on where the anchorage points are to be located.

The shackles are 8mm, with 1.00mm threads. The nuts are 8 x 1.00mm, with 15mm hex flats. Very unusual.

A few weeks ago I installed lap belt anchors in my 59 T2 cab. My installation is similar to the factory anchors in the T6 C cars and involved drilling and welding. There are a few photos at the following link - scroll down. http://porsche356registry.org/356talk/4 ... l?start=30
If the original tar paper sound deadening is present you would need to peel it back around the area to be welded. Let me know if you need more details.

"Beckengurte" or "lap belts"
or word by word: Pelvis belts...

Barry, '2 Paar Sicherheitsgurte' means '2 pair of Safety belts'.

Great stuff. I find out more everyday about what I don't know

Could you please provide the dimensions of the shackles? M8x1 and nuts SW15, OK. Would appreciate the width, length, radius and length of the threads.
Also, it would great to get a picture while installed in the car.
