fuse block 356 C

#1 Post by george batho »

should there be rubber insulators on the mounting screws that hold on the fuse block on a 356C 1964?
between the fuse block and the metal that the screw goes into?

thanks!

The parts books do not show any rubber grommets between the fuse block and the mounting plate, and none between the mounting plate and the chassis.

Parts catalogs are progressive. The T-6 and C books are supplements. So if you have a C car, you start with the 356B T-5 catalog. Parts that are changed from the B are only recorded in the T-6 and C catalogs. So, in the T-5 book, the buffer is reference # 22 in illustration 9/3 listed as p/n 644 612 691 00, 2 pieces required. AFAIK all subsequent cars had the same buffers under the fuse block (must be so, we have those made 500 at a time!). The securing screws shown in the T-6 book are 19,00 mm long; the buffer is 15,00 tall.

Side note -- take a look at the 356A catalog to see an even better drawing of both buffers. Depending on your catalog printing, the 644 612 691 00 number was preceded by p/n 356 61 132, indicating the buffers were used from the very early models.

Brad,

That is very interesting. I agree the parts books are progressive. Only changes come in the supplements. The T-6 & C supplements show a different line drawing from that shown in the T-5 parts book. Only the T-5 parts book shows the complete fuse block, and Rubber Buffer as you described. I assumed that since the T-5 doesn't have the mounting plate, as shown in the latter T6 & C supplements, that there were differences between the T5 & the T6/C. The T-5 fuse block is mounted center under the dash. The T6 & C fuse blocks are mounted on the driver's side on the back wall under the front hood with the mounting plate. The later T6 & C supplements which cover the front trunk mounted fuse blocks don't list a rubber buffer in the line drawing, hence my conclusion that for a C there was no rubber buffer. What might look like a rubber buffer in the T6 supplement, #24, is a hexagon nut (no difference in the C supplement). Am I incorrect in this?

On the driver's side, not passenger side.
