Pre A or A Sun visor?

#1 Post by Alain Buchert »

Here's a sun visor that I found, can you just tell me with these pictures if this is for 356 A?
What year until when?
Can you give me an idea of the price by email.
It is in very good condition complete, not broken, very nice chrome, just the plastic deformed by heat
Thanks for your help.

Alain, I don't think that is a 356A visor, it appears to be the second type of the 356 visor, used for a few years before the A model was introduced in late 1955. Exactly when the change was made for the first style (with the hex nut) to the second style I do not know. And Brett Johnson's "Authenticity" book doesn't say.

Only the seller can give you the price, and only you can decide what the "value" of the visor is to you.

Thank you Barry
The sun visor is mine, but I thought it is for VW cars!
On the 54-55 cars, there were two or one?
I want to sell it to a friend who restores a 356 European, I now think it is corect for him.

This sun visor was used between 1953 and 1956 - 1957 T1, it could also be installed for 1952 but there were several suble differences. I estimate the visor is worth $500 to $800 depending on the buyer's motivation and deep pockets.

My early '53 Super came with hex nut visors. So I think the change to the "foot" type visor came sometime during '53.

The difference between the pre-A mid 53 up and T-1 "A" visors is the angle of the chrome foot. I believe the t-1 foot is straight like the one pictured and the pre-A is angled (I believe because of the angle of the windshield).

Very interesting thank you for your comments
I think it's a 53 with the windshield in V on the picture below

Thanks Claude for the pic.

I looked in the Brett Johnson's "Authenticity" book, (rev2) on page 107 and 108 is very well explained with sketches and pictures, the differences between the first and second model of sun visor.

Ok, a second question- does the rolled edge turn up or turn down when the visor is up against the headliner (ie, non-deployed?)

crud, I guessed wrong;( But, at least I only temporarily used stainless mini nuts/bolts instead of the permanent rivets.

I have seen both types in the late '52 and '53 cars. I got a copy of DerWhites original '53 CD and it has the hex nuts. I have seen an original German import 356 unmolested with the type you are asking about. I also see that for a little north of $1000 you can buy a perfect copy of the hex version!

Here's a blow-up of a picture taken by Chrysler Engineering in March 1953, as part of a photo study of a 1953 1500 Super Porsche Coupe. The picture is included in a CD I offered some years ago, and my website:
