Eyebrow question

#1 Post by John Wurner »

I have a metal eyebrow that was attached to (slipped on to A Tach gauge dated 54).
Were these in Speedsters of that year, or other cars as well?
Answers appreciated. See picture.

Hi John,

No. All 1954 & 55 Speedsters had a non-symetrical wood laminate brow covering both gauges.

I drove your old 993 to work today. Runs great, but I gotta smog it again and that OBD system is a real bitch here in Ca.

Looks like an intrument hood for an individual instrument versus the dash eyebrow which was above and covered all of the instruments on a Speedster and roadster.

Here's what I'm trying to say -

Instrument hood:

Dash brow:

Bill
That is exactly it, I had seen them on a car before. I also have the three lights and the fuel gauge for that car, and a Stork gauge.
Do you know what year the pictured car is?
Thanks, John

John - that's just a photo that I found on Google images as an example - it's probably a '53 or earlier car because of the single "small" gauge - I think '54 and '55 had the two gauges. Bill

Here's a picture from an early 1955 factory binder. No eyebrows above the gauges, but a larger eyebrow above all of them.

John-if you have a copy of Charlie White's book='A 1953 356 Porsche Coupe' on page 14 and 15 you can clearly see these eyebrows in place on the instruments. My '53 coupe had them on the large(speedo/tach) and smaller(temp/gas tank pressure) round instruments. I think they are on most of the pre-A instrument dashes-coupe and convertable-that I have seen. I don't think they were on my '55 speedster though. That dash was like in picture in the above posting by DerWhite!

As Bob C said in post 2; the speedsters had the large eyebrow, so did not use the individual hoods.

Thanks all
They apparently were on the early cars (53 and 0lder) according to pics in the literature.
My 55 Speedster did not have them either.

Large eyebrows (speedo and tach) were used on coupes and cabs from '52 through '55 (not sure about earlier) The small eyebrows (temp and fuel) were used on '54 and '55 coupes and cabs.
