"Modell" Plaque and engine type

#1 Post by Laurent Clerc »

Hello,

Do you know if the engine type on the "Modell" plaque is always stamped with the correct reference to 1600 normal or 1600 super.

Below a picture of the "Modell" plaque of a 356A with a 1600 Super engine (616/2) as per COA, but the plaque just report "356A/1600". Should it be stamped "356A/1600S" ?

Thank you in advance for your info

Greetings

Laurent,

My original 1959 356A super does not have "S" on the identification plate. It still has its original 1600super engine. I don't think they defined the "S" on the plates.

Hello Roy!

Thank you very much for the info and picture. This clears a little doubt I had.

Since those plates were stamped in large quantities for the basic model, I would not expect a delineation between Normal and Super. Only the chassis number was stamped in when needed.

But apparently sometimes they did stamp an "S". See the first photo in the article "The "Modell" Plaque and 356 Model Years" on the page at http://porsche356registry.org/resources ... years.html

That's a photo of the plaques in the trunk of my '59 1600 Super coupe. There is an "S". Do I know for certain that it was put there at the factory? No I cannot be certain about that. But the car is all matching numbers and shows no sign of ever being hit. Original engine compartment insulation, gas tank dated 8/59. I doubt that plaque has ever been removed.

Maybe a previous owner stamped that "S". But I don't think that is likely. (the arrow in the photo is to point out the smaller "Modell" plaque because that is what the article is about)

Yes, I don't have the photo handy but 104762 is a '59 sunroof Super and it has an "S" stamped on the plate just like Barry's. I'll add that I've seen a lot without the stamp so it wasn't consistent. Barry, what's your chassis #?

That is why I was asking. I have found the Swiss Type Approval for the 356 Coupe 1600 Super issued in June 18, 1956 by the Swiss Approval Authority and still used by the Swiss Technical Services. Here attached below.

According to this document (section I've highlighted in the red square), it is written that the identification method for a 1600 S is that:

1) "1600 Super" is badged on the rear of the vehicle :)
2) "356 A / 1600 S" is stamped on the model plate

But now according to your posts, pictures and COA this seems not to be always the case. Mysteries, mysteries...

Greetings
