Fuel Tank Cap Color

#1 Post by Steve Vogel »

Just checking in to see if anyone knows the color of the fuel tank caps for A models, specifically 1956. Mine is black and may not be the original color and I have seen pics where they are natural - steel color. On the natural ones were they lacquered or some other type of coating? If I want to refinish mine in the original finish, what paint or finish would be appropriate? Thanks :?:

Steve, it is my understanding from Brad Ripley, whom I consider a 356 "parts expert" that the original factory finish on the 356 gas caps of that era was a zinc plating. I am pretty sure they were not "natural" if by that you mean bare metal.

The original finish can, I am told, be approximated by using a zinc-rich silver paint, and I have heard that Eastwood sells something suitable but I cannot provide a specific product name or part number.

Many people just paint them some sort of silver and are happy with that. A black color is definitely not "original".

Best regards,

Thanks Barry. I will strip the black paint and experiment with silvers.
