How can I find if this is an original car?
Who can identify if # 159231 is an original number for a 1964 356 Cabriolet? What other numbers do I need to get to make this a numbers matching car?

The #159231 in my reference list shows it to be a 1963 cabriolet. The numbers for 63 are between 159001 - 159832. The engine number to match seems to be between 710001 -7111870 for a 75HP engine. Does your engine fall in between these numbers. Maybe you have an SC 95HP engine? These have other numbers.
Maybe you should get a COE to get more history?
The front and rear hood lids have stamped numbers ( last 3 digits ) and the transmissiobn also has numbers and type on it.( details on where these can be found are on the registry help site )

I think we get back to the year built vs model year designation; Eric's site shows the car as a 1964 model year built in 1963.

Hello "eltome"'
You need to get the COA for the car. Read this article for an explanation.

Hi Barry, my name is Enrique, thanks for the wealth of information you have posted in the 356 Registry, it has been very helpful to me as I embark in my very first 356 project car.

I did get this response, but still no VIN.
"I have asked the owner for additional information, and the owner is reluctant to give out specifics except to the person who will be purchasing the car. I apologize for the inconvenience. I can give you the chassis number, if that will help."
I again asked for the VIN, a phone number, and if I could come see the car.

The key to what you car is concerns three items. 1) does it have disc brakes 2) below the radio opening is the ash tray enclosed with a metal surround that holds the lighter and headlight switch. 3) All the late 1963 cars had a special set of engine serial numbers that began with P0xxxxxx These engines were 356C cases with B internals. al zim

I own 159076 and have the COA, 356C CAB built in 63. Titled 64. Don't have the COA in front of me but believe it is a July 63 build.

According to the Porsche Spec's Book, the car is a 1964 model year.
I own 1963 Cab 158696. The last 1963 356B Cabriolet serial number is 158700.
The 356C Cabriolet serial numbers begin 159001. The car is a model year 1964 356C Cabriolet.
Best to all!
