Beehive rim screws

#1 Post by Brad Ripley »

Wanted -- Your opinions/thoughts/proof as to the type and size of screws used to secure the rims of beehive lights.

The last version of reproductions had small head SLOTTED screws. My recollection is origiinal screws were small head PHILLIPS screws. I remember the Phillips drive was smaller than normal and often "buggered up" with too large screwdrivers.

Any help in the next couple of days will be appreciated. Photos and/or dimensions will help.

Hello Brad Your memory is very good.Small phillips .I find a small flat blade screwdriver is best to remove them. Cheers Sandy in Nelson NZ.

Brad, These came on my 1956. I saved them when I switched to slotted. I can bring them by if you want.

Brad,
You may recall that for the early cars there was this discussion in 2009.
Subject: WTB: dimensions and pitch of original beehive screw

I was led to believe that the Phillips made there appearance in 1956 as a rule of thumb 1955 had no Phillip on the car ..

Wouldn't Porsche have included a phillips screwdriver in the '56 tool kit (there was none), if there were phillips head screws used on the car? They seem to have included most of the tools needed for a minor emergency on the road in the kits and I would think that a bulb change would be one of them. Thanks, Bob

My early '57 has slotted screws, and while this is not definitive anecdotal evidence, I will note that when I was on the hunt for lenses and sockets in the early '80s, I found mostly original-looking slotted screws.

For whatever its worth.

Slotted it's going to be for new reproduction lights.

I believe the screws should be slotted, at least that is what I have found on three unrestored Speedsters with bee hive lights.

My strictly personal conclusion about phillips-heads is this:

In the 70's & 80's, the only off-the-shelf metric oval-head screws available in that size were, for whatever reason, phillips. I know I couldn't find a slotted version to save my butt.
