Luggage brackets on rear panel

#1 Post by Ned Hamlin »

Here's one for coupe owners. I have been trying to determine if the luggage strap brackets on the rear panel are supposed to point up or down. At the WCH I got different answers from several participants. My original interior coupe had them installed pointing down, and I'm assuming that is correct since the car was totally unmolested. The brackets near the floor are also pointing down.

Anyone have any insight on this one? Pictures I see of interiors have them both ways.

Thanks.

Hi Ned:

In two references I found, the brackets point up, such that the screws are below the luggage strap brackets (1,2).

References
1. "Porsche Workshop Manual Type 356A," p. R10, Fig. 9 (August 1956).
2. "Neil's Book: The 356A Porsche," Neil Goldberg, pp. 62-63 (September 2010).

One might reasonably assume that Porsche did them both ways, though they may have favored one way over the other for a given model or during a particular model year. The Germans were not always as anal as the popular stereotype portrays them to be.

All known original cars I have seen, and all period photos I have seen had the luggage strap brackets pointing up.

Hi Ned,

I just have to ask: you know your 356 is "totally unmolested" because you have been the owner since it was new and you have never removed the luggage strap loops?

It would only take someone a couple of minutes to reverse them. Maybe someone else thought they looked better, or were more functional, pointing the other direction...

Barry,

I have spoken at length with both previous owners, and neither of them would know how to use a screwdriver. Everything in the interior is per factory except for a few things that I have done. I seriously doubt that the PO's would care about or even think of flipping the brackets. All they did was get in the car, drive it, have it serviced, and the last one put it away in 1979.

I'm just curious if there are any original owners out there who could shed light on this.

Thanks.

After looking at hundreds of pictures of 356s in my image collection, I found two with the brakets pointing up, and two with the brakets pointing down. Most people don't take pictures of that back panel when they're photographing their car.

Hi there Ned,
FYI my '56 has all brackets "up," and my guess, because it was raced, is that these were largely ignored...hence likely original. Hope this helps.
