NARDI steering wheels

#1 Post by John Wurner »

Trying to ID two NARDI steering wheels, neither has a date on the back of the spokes, both are signed. 400mm size, the B/C wheel has the double action horn button, the A wheel the normal button.
Both are unrestored and the wood is good, but shows the age.
The question is, are they original without Turin or a date on the back?
Will attempt to post pics.
Thanks

John

The B/C wheel should be made sometime before 1966. I'm very surprised that it does not have a date stamp. The wheels made after 66 (I could be off by a couple years) did not have the rivets in them and did not have date stamps. The A wheel is a VDM. Very nice and very desirable! Actually, they both are.

Jim,

I almost never dis-agree with you (unless its about who is going to win the Ryder Cup and I am usually right about that one  ) But the wheel shown is not a VDM

You are correct, it has the Nardi signature on the right spoke.

OK, you young whippersnapper, what is it then? I'm still basking in the glory of my San Francisco Giant World Series win and you have to mention the Ryder Cup. You really know how to hurt a guy!

Jim, what are friends for

It's a first series flat Nardi. As you can see in the pictures the hub is thinner compared to the later Nardi's. I have never seen these early wheels with a date stamp. The later thick hub ones were usually date stamped.

Attached a picture of my original flat VDM for comparison.

Thanks Joris

I was interested in what it really was. It looks like a Nardi hub but the spokes and the wood are a bit different. Is your VDM date stamped?

The 67 B/C dished Nardi's did not have rivets. I am running one on my Roadster.

Received info on the A wheel from the previous owner, who owned the wheel about 20 years ago, that the hub is a steel hub, which is correct.
Anyone know when they went to aluminum?

John,

You will find that the beauty ring on the front of the wheel is steel also and chrome plated. All in all the early wheel is more elegant in my opinion compared to the later wheel because of the thin hub.

I recently sold one of the 550/Carrera VDM wood wheels and mine had no date stamp. It was very cool and I almost kept it, but it was worth just too damn much.

Guess this is the interesting part, how much are they likely to cost?

Judging by the horn button. That wheel is a garden variety Nardi "fit all" wheel that was made in the late 80s or early 90s. Hardly rare and certainly not "vintage" in the true sense of the word.
