Notice the differences.

These are very different. the key blanks are also different. You can not interchange them in the car, either

The main difference in shift housings. You can not put a t6 shift handle in a T5 housing and you can not put a T6 shift lock in a T5 housing. Many have attempted it and there is not enough metal in the housing of the T5 to bore out the hole big enough to install the T6 shift lock. All T6 cars got shift locks and very few T5s got them.

Jim,
Were there differences in the operation of these, did one type lock in gear and the other
in neutral ? Did they both require pushing an indent to engage the mechanism ? My built
in August 62 63 locks in neutral. Thanks for any answers, well, almost any.....

Mine only locks in neutral as well. I seem to remember it used to lock in neutral and first, that was 40 years ago. Out of adjustment?

Sorry, I can't answer your question. I've never used any of mine. They do require that you push in to engage the lock. That much I do know.

I thought the T-6 ones locked in neutral and reverse, but I haven't driven my car in many years.

My 60 Roadster has a t-6 shift housing and shift lock installed. It does lock in neutral and reverse. It does have to be pushed down to engage.

Is the key that locks the shift the same as the ignition key? Our T-6 won't seem to lock (in Neutral or Reverse as the owners manual claims), and I am not game to twist the key harder in fear of bending or snapping the old key...

The T-6 shift lock key is longer than the ignition key. You need a Trannie key made to your lock. Try Tony Eugeneo he can do that for $75 I was told recently.
