Knecht oil filter can

#1 Post by Ken Daugherty »

In sorting thru the collection of oil filter cans, I have found one that may be a Knecht.
See pictures attached.
This can was originally silver with a black top.
Several years ago I bought some Knecht oil filter decals from Mark Christensen. I tried the (old) e-mail address I had for Mark and it is bad.
Help me id this oil filter can and possible era of use.
Thanks.

1953 or so. The early ones had a drain like the one you have pictured. Porsche must have saved tons of money eliminating that very handy feature on later models.

Yeah, but think what a boon it has been to the turkey baster industry.

Ken, I think the filters with the side drain plug were more in the '55 time frame. '53's did not have filters for the most part and '54's had mostly Frams with out the side drain. Not sure who made the filters with the side drain but you may well be correct that they were Knecht, I have one on a '55 motor but it has been painted so no original decals. As an aside it's lid is slightly different than the one in your picture but the body appears to be identical.

Hello, did you ever find the guy who reproduced them? I have a Knecht canister aswell, painted in silver/black lid. Knecht logo is stamped on top of the lid with an FO 108/1 stamp on the other side. No drain hole like the one shown before.. Stamp's fading but still shows some info.
