Re: Searching for chassis number/model info
According to http://www.356a.com that engine number would have been installed in a 1956 production year car.
Only the Kardex for the car that engine was originally installed in would be able to tell you the chassis number. But you have to know the chassis number to get the COA (Kardex info) from Porsche.
Good luck.

Re: Searching for chassis number/model info
As a matter of general interest, Speedster 82850 had engine P63841, transmission 12492, and had a production date of 12-20-1956 and it is a model year 1957, according to the original Kardex.

Re: Searching for chassis number/model info
Hi Tom,
If you check the chassis number range for engine 63865 at 356a.com, it shows that engine could have been installed in Speedster 82001 to 82850 (or in a coupe or cabriolet of course) during the 1956 production year.
So I am not surprised that Speedster 82850 is shown on the Kardex as being model year 1957, since that model year started sometime around September 1956 and the Kardex date for that car is shown as 12-20-1956. That would make it a '57 model year.
Best regards,

Re: Searching for chassis number/model info
Mr. Scott:
This is interesting information as I was not aware that the Kardex noted the model year. Its certainly is not on mine and I have not seen it on the few others I have seen.
With all due respect Mr. Brisco, I don't think so.
The model year change from '56 to '57 occurred during Dec. of '56. Furthermore, the Factory Body and Engine Identification chart is incorrect (what a surprise) about the engine and body no. applications during this transitional month.
My coupe, "Ready to Ship" on 21 Dec. '56 (per orig. Kardex copy) is clearly stamped by the Factory as a '57 on the id plate by the gas tank. It is chassis no. 58302 and has engine 63845 (trans no. 12518). The chassis no. is 10 earlier than shown for '57s and it is not even the lowest number '57 known to be built in Dec. The engine no. is 82 lower than shown on the chart and it too is not the lowest known in a '57.
Even given the lax attitude about sequencing, it is clear the subject engine should be M.Y. '57, assembled probably in early Jan. of '57.
Just tryin' to keep the record straight.
Keep 'em flying..

Re: Searching for chassis number/model info
Thanks for your responses. I'm aware that the engine is from a 56. I'm hoping there is someone out there that may have either a Kardex or CoA that may reflect this motor number. It has been in my 59 T2 since I bought the car in 1977. Beginning a bare chassis restoration
after sitting for 20 years in my basement. Will likely rebuild this motor but was curious what it might have been installed in originally.

Mr. Pike:
As noted above, your engine was assembled to one of the first hundred or so M.Y. '57s built and is a 1600N.
