The date code stamped on the end of the coil will go a long way toward answering this question. The coil strap with the hole in the center was used by Bosch in the mid '50s. So, assuming the blue paint and stickers are original, my guess is the blue coil was an upgrade by the original owner or dealership using an old stock (1954-56?) part.

I have had a lot of people searching through my coil collection to find one with the proper (letter) date code. I suggest you post the letter or numeric date code on the coil and I will be that someone that is an authority on 356 coils will be able to tell you when it was made.
In my estimation the coil looks a little short for and early coil. al zim

Gents: I have a faded, black '57 Normal Coupe full of patina. Solid over-rider bar acoss the back, meaning before they made the rear over-riders in 2 pieces. This old car is faded like Bob Campbell's black Speedster...in fact, although his drivetrain has been restored, that might be another car for you to compare to. I believe he kept the original color scheme for the engine if I recall correctly. The internals of the engine were massaged for some more horses. My engine looks just like Bob's engine - carbs, coil, distributer, and all.

My original engine's "original" coil is black (no repaint or replacement).

Oil canister is still silver and the canister's lid is black. I can take photos if you don't mind old, faded, unrestored parts!

I have the engine out to attend to a spark plug heli-coil that decided to come all the way out when I removed the #4 plug.

Tom

Faded, rusty, dusty, grunge crusted parts are the only ones that have one shred of credibility! Pictures please.

The original coils for 356 Pre A, A, B and C's were all black, satin finish. Furthermore, there is a date code on the bottom (or top since there were installed upside down), check the date code on the blue one. There is an authoritative article on date codes which apeared in the January 2008 Registry newsletter.

Coils for pushrod engines were black. The only ones in '57 which were blue were for those funny engines with 4 cams (the strap was also painted blue). Sorry, I don't have a better photo at the moment but you can see the blue coils peeking from the rear compartment wall.

Oil cannister color varies depending on the type. My '57 had an all green Mann filter.
