For those who obsess about exactly how their 356 left the factory!

We are working on a 1959 Cabriolet and just noticed two dimples just above the taillight openings. They are identical on both sides. Looks like a reference mark from the original stamping, maybe to locate the reflectors above the taillight?

Ken, your explanation is a good one.

That is a much cheaper solution than the factory creating Special locating tools to drill two simple holes., which we now can surmise as not happening.

Could locate centerline on the car and measure out to the divots to see their relationship? This may explain if there is any significance of them being there in the first place.
