Gasket sets, travel kit
Recently I posted a question about the upper gasket boxes on the forum. Never did get an difinitive answer. Will ask here.
I have two different styled of cardboard upper gasket boxes. One is plain tan and the other has a maroon Porsche patern. The plain is what I see in travel kits. My question is when did Porsche start using the maroon pattern gasket box? The part nimber on both boxes is 616/100/195/00
See attached pictres.
Thanks..

Re: Gasket sets, travel kit
Ken-
Perhaps you can figure it out this way. Mine is original to my kit, and is the "plain" box style as shown below. Mine if for my '65 C.
I dare to say that the box I have is correct and original and as issued by Porsche for my car.
You'll need some other data points, but this is a start?

Re: Gasket sets, travel kit
Ken:
A few years back, I bought and sold 6-7 356 b/c travel kits so I spent some time learning about the contents of these kits. But a little knowledge can be dangerous, and that is what I have -- a little knowledge. So please take this response with that in mind.
As a follow up to the reply posted by Paul Hatfield, I think Paul's original gasket kit is Porsche part number 616 100 184 00 or 616 100 184 01. I have seen both in a 356C kits and the Porsche parts book uses that part number. In fact the 912 parts books I have seen use that part number.
Your gasket kit has part number 616 100 195 00. I have also found quite a few of the gasket kits with this part number but I was not able to find that part number in the old Porsche parts books.
MY opinion --- stress opinion -- is:
1) Your gasket kits -- both of them are a later version. Why the change in part number, I don't know. My guess is they put some gaskets in the 195 kit that were not in the 184 kit or somehow changed the contents. I have seen a parts contents list of the 184 kit but I have never found a contents list for a 195 kit. So, I have not been able to confirm my opinion. I also don't know when the 195 kit was released. There are a lot of 195 kits out there and all of the 195 kits I have seen look vintage. So I think the 195 kits have been around for many years -- again my opinion.
If we could find two unopened kits we could solve the mystery. But who wants to open unopened kits. So if we could find a parts contents list for the 195 kit, that might help determine why Porsche issued a gasket kit with another part number.
Wish I could help more, but that is about all I learned before I hit a dead end.
Cheers!

Re: Gasket sets, travel kit
From factory bulletin book in my possession, the following are listed, quote:
616 100 184 00 One Set engine gaskets for 1600, 1600S, 1600 S 90, 912
616 100 184 02 " "" "" for 912 Model 1969
616 100 195 00 " " " 1300, 1300 S, 1600, 1600 S with Solex carburetor
32 PBJ, 32 PBJC and 40 PJCB
I can provide lists of part numbers in each kit if someone is interested.
As for the boxes, from my knowledge, the plain tan box is mid-60's and the colored box is later but before Porsche/Audi time.

Re: Gasket sets, travel kit
Thanks Brad for the explanation of the numbers.
I have a S90 gasket set.
The markings are slightly different from Ken and Paul's boxes.
Instead of a part sticker, my part number is ink stamped on.
I will dig it out and photograph it.

Re: Gasket sets, travel kit
For what it’s worth and as another data point, I have two identical plain gasket boxes that I received when I bought my car 30 years ago from the original owner. Both boxes are marked with the 616 100 184 00 part number. For some reason the previous owner felt compelled to write with a black sharpie pen, what was contained in the boxes, but he also dated the boxes 2-17-71. We can at least discern from this little factoid, that the plain brown gasket boxes were pre-1971. One I use on my travel kit and the other I keep with my 356 collectibles. Very unofficial no doubt, and if my memory serves me correctly, it predates the maroon Porsche pattern box in Ken’s picture.

Brad: Thanks for the informed response. I would be interested in a list of the contents of the kits. I would try to do a comparison and see what the differences are. My e-mail address is jlinden374@sbcglobal.net. Thanks John

Hi Brad:
If you do compile a listing of the contents can you post it here on the Authenticity Corner. I'm sure there are many others who would be very interested in such a list.
Thanks,

Re: Gasket sets, travel kit
Reviving this thread - I acquired a box of Gaskets 616.100.195.00, hoping it would be for a later car/912 but it seems to be for the Pre-A/A from what I have read/gathered. I don't really need to be the steward of something that does not work for my car. I have very little idea of what that is worth, it appears to be very complete. Would anyone here be so kind to guide me as to value?
Thank you!
Thank you!

Re: Gasket sets, travel kit
Mathieu, the contents of the gasket set are correct for a late gasket kit. It has the rubber gaskets for Solex 40PII air filters, the gasket for the late model oil filler body and the intake port gaskets for C/SC/912 heads, among other things.

Re: Gasket sets, travel kit
It would also include at least C Zenith cars, and possibly all the way to the first A s with Zeniths. It has two sets of intake manifold gaskets, possibly including A and B cars.

Re: Gasket sets, travel kit
The gasket sets are listed in the engine section of the parts manual. I do not think they are included in the PET version. I looked in the Romano list and they are there.
