Special color for my 1959 cab

#1 Post by Felix Macaluso »

The Kardex for my '59 cab indicates the paint color is 'reihergrau' which I translate as Heron Gray. This color does not appear in A car paint samples but in 1960 it is listed as 6007. Unfortunately I have lost the original metal paint code tag. Should I assume the color was a special order in '59 and restamp a tag as 6007? The date of manufacture is 6/3/59. Could the factory have been offering a '60 color in June of '59?

Hi, Felix:

Seems like quite a few of us have read your post but, like me, don't have a definitive answer for you. Allow me to add my 2 cents.
Since the 1960 model was most likely in the works, the colors were as well. If it was a paint to match color, the number would have been different, beginning with a "9" if I have read correctly. But since Heron gray was a Porsche color and it is stated on the Kardex, I'm of the opinion that the number 6007 would have been stamped on the tag.

"Porsche...consistently inconsistent..."

Thanks for the comments Mike. I'm of the same opinion and will stamp the tag as such.

I believe the tag should show the Reutter number 639 for Heron Grey - not the Porsche number.

+1 since it wasn't a MY60 code just yet

Guys, thanks for the comments. I'll stamp it with the Reutter code... but my research indicates the code is 739 and not 639 that Spencer indicated. I used Wilhoit's list.

Hmmm, sorry for the confusion Felix; I looked in Brett Johnson's new Authenticity IV, and double checked it against the 1997 edition before I posted the 639 paint code.
I see that the Stoddard catalog also lists the Reutter code for Heron Grey as 739. Now I'm really curious so I dug out my original 1987 edition of Brett's guide, and see that he listed Heron Grey as 739 in his first guide. (Glad my 356s are all black and silver!) That's funny as I just got back from having lunch with Brett in Pasadena. He was doing a book signing at Sierra Madre's facility today, and will be signing books at the Lit Meet in LA on Saturday. I suppose this is simply a typo, and I'll make Brett aware for future printings of his book.

Some changes were made in the second printing of Authenticity IV, but I don't know if this was one of them. Brett says he will reply to this thread when he gets back home next Wed or Thur.
Here's the chassis no. and paint no. tag on a Heron Grey 61 T5 B.
