Clutch cable replacement
I have my transmission out and am considering whether to change the clutch cable or not. The tube seems a bit rough, but the cable seems in very good condition. Where in the cable length do these typically fray and then break? I've got new bowden tube and cable in hand in my spare parts bag. Anything wrong with just changing the tube only?

They typically break near the ends when the clevis pins or pivots start to stiffen from lack of lubrication. If everything is loose and lubricated well, and the cable itself is lubricated well, I don't see any reason to replace it.
Cheers,

Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.....

Ron,
This is the time, the job is half done and access is
better. Where do these cable normally break? In the worst
part of town or way out in the boonies and in the hours of 1
am to 5am.

Alan,
With that in mind I will closely examine the existing cable again before I replace the transmission. And I will be signing up for Triple - A about the time I get the car back working!
My existing cable shows absolutely no signs of wear that I can see yet. Just the bowden tube was scarred up so I will definitely replace that. Makes me think that the cable may have been replaced prior to my ownership at some time.
Regards everyone,
